Thoughts on Words

There are so many thoughts rolling around in my head these days. Work is busy like always, Jared is busy finishing up his Associates degree in the next few weeks. Benjamin is as active as an almost three year old can be and loves to run and jump and climb as much as ever. Elizabeth is almost a year old and could walk if she trusted herself but she does stairs pretty darn well. We are moving in August which I’m torn on in several ways. Excited to try something new, nervous about making new friends, grateful I can take my job with me to Utah and watching the days go by and trying not to process too much about how I feel about leaving close friends and family behind for two years.

But the number one thing at the top of my mind lately is relationships and how we treat each other. The age old adage of “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” rings out at the top of my mind. It has been plaguing me as I have wanted to lash out and hurt someone intentionally as they have hurt me. Yet when I think of things I could do I know I’m not following my Savior’s example and doing what He would have me do.

A young woman from church recently posted the below quote online that I love and I am very familiar with: “Women of God can never be like women of the world. The world has enough women who are tough; we need women who are tender. There are enough women who are coarse; we need women who are kind. There are enough women who are rude; we need women who are refined. We have enough women of fame and fortune; we need more women of faith. We have enough greed; we need more goodness. We have enough vanity; we need more virtue. We have enough popularity; we need more purity.” (The Joy of Womanhood Margaret D. Nadauld)

With these two quotes rolling around in my head I realize I need to forgive the offense I have taken and be a woman who is kind and tender. It is certainly not easy but I know it’s the right thing to do. Today at church the two adult speakers both said or shared something that stuck out to me along this topic. Brother Randy Durham shared how we have two ears that are inputs, two eyes which are inputs and two nostrils which are again inputs, yet we only have one mouth with is an output from our brain (yes I know it has its inputs too but that’s irrelevant to this point). This brother’s comment after pointing these items out about the human head was that as such we should listen and observe twice as much and speak half as much. We need to be aware and cautious of the words coming out of our mouth. And Sister Wendy Carroll also shared similar thoughts about being mindful of the words coming out of our mouths and sometimes even more so the tone in which we say them.

Words are powerful. They can give hope, love, comfort, safety, inspiration and guidance. But they can also break hearts, give offense and be used to harm and hurt others. I’ve been slowly learning this lesson over the past year (and I am sure longer). Once words have left your mouth you can’t take them back. Especially words that you didn’t mean for someone else to hear, others can and will unfortunately share your words and they make it back to certain parties whom you never wanted to hear it. What has this lesson taught me? “If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all.”

There is something interesting about women. You get a few of them together and they are bound to gossip about other women (and men). Why is this? Why do we tear one another down? We all have faults. A story from the scriptures comes to mind when the Savior has a woman brought before Him who was caught in adultery. What does He do? What does He say? How does He judge her? “Jesus stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground, as though he heard them not. So when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her. And again he stooped down, and wrote on the ground. And they which heard it, being convicted by their own conscience, went out one by one, beginning at the eldest, even unto the last: and Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst. When Jesus had lifted up himself, and saw none but the woman, he said unto her, Woman, where are those thine accusers? hath no man condemned thee? She said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said unto her, Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more.” (St. John 8:6-11)

Jesus has set the ultimate example. We are to love one another and we are to not judge one another. I strongly believe that we were given our mouths to uplift one another and love one another. Does it make it easy? No! I am just as guilty but I am trying. I am so grateful for my Savior’s example of love and forgiveness. I cannot express my gratitude enough for His atonement that helps me to forgive others and be forgiven of my shortcomings.

Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving this year was good a little different but good. I love this time of year where we pause and reflect so much more on all the blessings that we receive from our Heavenly Father. My heart has been so full over the past few weeks. I am thankful for my Heavenly Father and how well He knows me and my family's needs. It's amazing to watch things come together not the way I would have planned but how He knows it needed to be to bless our family. I am so grateful to know that I am a daughter of God.

I am incredibly grateful for my husband. He is working so hard on his schooling and I know it is not his favorite thing to do. He enjoys learning but the structure of school is not his ideal way of doing things. But he keeps trying and making time for it and is pushing himself forward to bless our family. He is always taking such great care of Benjamin and I and loving us.

I am grateful to be a mom. There is something so amazing and fulfilling about having children and loving them so unconditionally. Benjamin brings me so much joy everyday. If I am in a bad mood or sad Jared will just tell Benjamin to hug me and it cheers me up.

I am grateful for my family that I grew up in. Especially for the parents! My mom is my best friend and she is so insightful and understanding. I am thankful for the time I get to spend with her. I am thankful for her example to me on being a mother and a friend.

I am grateful for my membership in the true church on the earth. I am thankful for my Savior and His atonement which is such a huge part of my life and testimony. The gospel in my life is just a major part of who I am and how I live my life and I see blessings from it every day.

I am grateful for my job and the blessing it is financially and the flexibility I have. The team I work with is great and my boss is wonderful.

I am thankful for the friends I have and their love and support.

I feel so blessed in so many aspects of my life and I am grateful for all that Heavenly Father has blessed me with and I recognize that they all come from him.

Thankful for...Veterans

I am grateful to live in the United States of America and be blessed with so many freedoms that others do not enjoy. There are so many women and men who have served and continue to serve to protect those freedoms and keep our country safe. I am grateful to my Boppa who served for so many years. I am grateful for my brother who serves now. My life is so truly blessed to live here. I love my country and I am proud to be an American!

Thankful for...My Job

I am thankful for my job and the blessing it is on our family. I am especially thankful for my boss who is so kind, patient and understanding. I've been sick this week and so has Benjamin so I've been blessed to work from home since Tuesday.

Thankful for...Hugs

I love being a mom. It's such a wonderful blessing in my life. One of the best
things about being a mom is the hugs. I love it when Benjamin crawls into my
lap and wraps his tiny arms as far around me as he can and nestles his head
between my head and shoulder. I love to cherish those moments together. I try
to never rush the hug and just let him hold me and I him until he is ready to
let go. I am thankful for hugs especially from my little Benjamin.

Thankful for...Fall

Fall can be dismal and hard to get through some days. But with days like today I am grateful it is fall. The sun is shining, the leaves are blowing in the breeze and there is patches of blue sky. I am thankful for fall and the beauty that can be found therein.

Thankful for...This Time of Year

It's that time of year where the holiday season is upon us! I am so excited. I recently watched "Miracle on 34th Street" and felt it was a great kick off to my holiday season. I don't ever think it's too early to start up feelings of gratitude and thoughts of our Savior's birth. I feel like there is magic in the air at this time of year as the world comes together and thinks more about the miracle of Jesus' birth and what He has done for each of us.
I am thankful for this time of year to reflect on the past year and all that I have been blessed with.

Thankful...

I wanted to wrap up my month of thankfulness with a little bit of a gospel topic Tuesday action. Unfortunately at night I am too tired to get online and do this (sleep is much more important to me) so it's a little late.

The whole reason for me writing about things I am thankful for stemmed from a General Conference talk by President Monson this past October. His talk titled "
The Divine Gift of Gratitude" talks about how when we are truly thankful we are able to unlock the doors of heaven and feel more of our Father's love. I have found this true in my life. When I am thankful and focus on the countless blessings I have received I can see more clearly the love Heavenly Father has for me. And what a blessing to know that as we give thanks the doors of Heaven are opened, in these days that we are living in who couldn't afford to be a little closer to Heaven?

President Monson said, "Regardless of our circumstances, each of us has much for which to be grateful if we will but pause and contemplate our blessings." There are moments (I did use the word moments specifically for a reason. I know that when you are in the midst of a trial it doesn't seem like a moment in time but once you have gone through it and reflect back on it, it really was only a moment) in our lives when we are feeling we are not being blessed. Those are the times we most especially need to stop and contemplate all we have and look for the blessings we have been given.
I am thankful for the gospel in my life and the knowledge and testimony I have that the gospel is true. That Joseph Smith was called of God to restore His true church back onto the earth. I am thankful for the Book of Mormon and other scriptures I am blessed to have in my life to study and learn gospel principles from and to gain further enlightenment and answers to prayers. I am thankful for the power of prayer and know that my prayers are heard and answered. I am thankful for my husband and all that he does for me and our family. I am especially thankful he is a worthy priesthood holder which blesses our lives immensely. I am thankful I was blessed with Benjamin this year and that everything went well and he is growing strong and healthy. I am thankful for this time of year to reflect on the miraculous birth of our Savior. I am so thankful for our Savior and His love for each of us and His willingness to atone for our sins. I know I can go to Him at any time and find comfort, understanding, guidance, acceptance, love and forgiveness.
The list goes on but I am going to leave it there. I've enjoyed turning my thoughts toward my blessings and thinking about things throughout the day that I am thankful for. I have felt it to be a blessing in my life. I hope that I can continue this habit of being thankful throughout the year. And anyone who reads this I challenge you to do it too.

Thankful for...Nurse Aja

Today is not over but I am thankful for Benjamin's nurse Aja. She is great at giving his shots quickly and handing him over to me. I am thankful that she is quick and efficient and tries to make it less painful for all involved.

Thankful for...Pedicures & Home

Yesterday I was thankful for pedicures! My mom and I took some time to get pedicures together and we did our nails the opposite of each other. It was great to hang out and be pampered together.
...
Today I am thankful to be home. Traveling is great but there is nothing like your own space and bed. I am also thankful for our safety as the roads were a bit dangerous here and there.

Thankful for...Family Time

Yesterday I was thankful for family time with my extended family. We are visiting my mom and Rudy and my sister Megan is here. We went out and ate great food together and went back to the hotel to swim later. It was great to hang out and just enjoy each other's company. The day before we got to hang out with my brother Jamie and his son Mason. I love family time and appreciate the moments we get together.

Thankful for...Freedom

Yesterday I was thankful for the freedom to travel about as we please. We are so fortunate to travel about and move from place to place so easily. It's great that we are blessed with so many freedoms. I love this country that we live in. I am thankful for the men and women who serve our country to preserve our freedoms. There are days we take it for granted but every time we travel I am reminded of it that we cross state borders without any issue. We get to do things we enjoy and desire without any interference or fear of being punished.

Thankful for...Electricity

Today I am thankful for electricity. There are many reasons to be thankful for it. One I have so many modern conveniences...an oven to cook on and in, a microwave to heat things up, a toaster to make my bread, a mixing bowl to mix my baking items (I don't know how they beat egg whites to stiff peaks back in the day), a washer and dryer for my clothes, lights on my Christmas tree, lights around the house, a heater, warm water to wash with...the list goes on.
While listening to the radio this morning talk about the number of people still out of power and how many might get their power on today or even not until tomorrow it made me think how lucky I am. How stressful for so many families right before Thanksgiving to not be able to do their normal festivity preparations.
I admire those before who made due without power. And I am especially thankful for those who were inspired on how to develop electricity and make it possible to bless my life so immensely today.

Thankful for...Extra Time Together

Today I am thankful for an unexpected day together. Since it snowed yesterday Jared stayed home due to the road conditions. It helped to free me up to get my work done. Benjamin got extra Daddy time. And we got more time together as a family. It's been a great day and we've still got 5-6 hours until bed time.
I know I was hoping Jared would get to stay home today. I just love the extra time it's like an extra Saturday.

Thankful for...Imagination

Last night we had the opportunity to babysit our nephews. Jared did great with them, I mostly watched from the sidelines while making dinner, caring for Benjamin and journaling. It was great watching them and their imaginations coming to life. Jared got out flashlights at one point (identical ones so there was no fighting) and they started looking for monsters. Nice monsters and ones that eat your boogers so you better keep a clean nose by blowing it. They ran all over the house finding things under the piano and couch. On the ceiling and down the hall way. It kept them quite preoccupied and distracted from much else. I just loved how they were so creative (Jared included) in their monsters and how to capture them and tell if they were bad or good monsters.

Thankful for...(Catch Up)

I know I am behind in my postings of giving thanks for my blessings. But I have not forgotten. This has actually made me be more aware of my blessings. Throughout each day I am thinking of things I am thankful for and giving thanks more to Heavenly Father for all that I have. I am hoping that I can keep this attitude of gratitude going throughout the year. A friend of mine gave a great talk in church today. She pointed out how Heavenly Father loves to hear us giving thanks for all that we have. I’ve noticed in my life how when I stop and think about it I really do have so much. Listing only one thing each day that I am thankful for is sometimes hard when I stop and think about it because there are so many things to be thankful for.

I haven’t listed anything since Wednesday so that is 4 things to list that I am thankful for…

I am thankful for experiencing the first snowfall of the year with Benjamin. Benjamin and I were hanging out in the kitchen this morning getting things ready for church when I saw it was snowing. I picked him up and had him look out the window. I decided to go outside into the freezing cold and show him the snow up close. I caught a snowflake and brought my hand close to his face to watch it melt away. It was wonderful to experience with him the first snowfall of the year and his first experience with snow. It was beautiful to see everything lightly dusted in snow.

I am thankful for my husband! He is such an amazing person. He makes me laugh frequently. I am always impressed and grateful to see how he is with Benjamin. They have a pretty special bond already. Jared spoils me frequently and I don’t know that I always tell him thank you. He lets me (within reason) have whatever I want. He lets me go scrapbooking on a Saturday and come pick Benjamin up once he is done giving service so I can finish what I am doing. He takes care of things I rarely even think about like finances and the garbage and I very rarely say thank you. So thank you to my husband for being the best husband for me.

I am thankful for this time of year that helps turn everyone’s thoughts (for the most part) to our Savior, Jesus Christ. I love this time of year. It is my favorite. While I do enjoy the presents I really love turning my thoughts more towards the miracle of his birth and the gifts he has given us like the atonement. Without the atonement our lives would be pointless we would have no way to return to live with our Heavenly Father again.

I am thankful for my warm house. I know I am blessed to have a warm place to keep all of my things and to lay myself down to sleep each night. Especially as the days get colder I become more thankful for my warm home, clothes and blankets.

Thankful...Ability to Breathe

I am thankful today for the ability to breathe!
(take a deep breath...aaahhh)
I almost completely overlooked this. I got a slight cold at the end of last week which plugged me up and made it so I couldn't breathe especially at night (I'm sure my snoring was unbearable). Today I am able to breathe without any issue and my throat is no longer sore!!! Hallelujah! I was talking with a co-worker who is coming down with a cold which made me realize what a blessing it was that I could breathe today without any issue. Which made me think further on how often we take our bodies for granted. When things don't work correctly we sure do notice it but we don't give thanks very often when things are working correctly. I am thankful for my body that is a pretty amazing gift with all of it's capabilities.

Thankful...my husband

Today I am thankful for my husband. He is such a great person. I love and appreciate how great he is with Benjamin. They have a special bond! I am grateful for how Jared helps me to realize what is more important.

Thankful...Crockpots and Showers

Yesterday I was thankful for crock pots. I am trying to get better at using my crock pot because it is so nice to come home to dinner ready to go. The issue is that I stick to recipes I know so I've started branching out recently and getting some great stuff.
Today I am thankful for showers. My feet were freezing of my own accord. I should have put socks on but I finally took my shower and it was so nice and hot. It warmed me up nicely. I am grateful that I have running water to warm myself up and to clean myself with along with my household.

Thankful...Family Time and Inspired Leaders

Yesterday I was thankful for family time. Jared got home early from work by and hour and a half. It was a great surprise for Benjamin and I. We decided to make the most of it and go out and do something as a family. We went to the YMCA and went swimming. Benjamin absolutely loved it. He loves to swim! He was just floating on his back kicking his little feet. We wore him out pretty good.
Today I am thankful for inspired leaders. I went to a leadership training tonight and I just felt so very thankful for all the leaders everywhere in the church who follow the spirit and try their best to do what the Lord wants them to do.
